The Masked Singer Winner Jokes They Wanted to Go Home Night 1

Published December 19, 2024

During the thrilling season 12 finale of The Masked Singer, the Buffalos, known to many as Boyz II Men, made history by becoming the first group to win the coveted Golden Mask trophy. However, their initial thoughts were far from victory.

Wanyá Morris, one of the group members, shared with Us Weekly that they were hesitant to join the show at first. "For the umpteenth time they called us… and we decided that we were gonna do it," he said. The band had previously been unable to participate, but they eventually agreed to join in hopes of resolving the persistent invitations. "Let’s just get it over with so they’ll never call us again," Wanyá added.

Wanyá, along with his bandmates Nathan Morris and Shawn Stockman, believed that participating in the show would provide them with good exposure. However, they were skeptical about their chances of winning. They were aware that The Masked Singer often eliminates well-known artists early in the competition, which made them assume they would face the same fate.

Reflecting on their thoughts, Wanyá stated, "We probably won’t win ’cause they’ll know who we are. We’re gonna be either guessed off, or if we mask our voices, we know they won’t like who we are and we’ll get kicked off." Nathan humorously interjected that they were hoping to be eliminated on the first night, allowing them to go home.

However, once filming began, their perspective shifted. "Once we got there and we saw the energy and we felt the whole vibe, we were just like, ‘Look, man, as long as we’re here, we might as well stay and win. And then leave!’" said Wanyá. Initially, the trio expected little from the experience, but they became invested in performing as the Buffalos.

Nathan explained that the experience allowed them to express their true selves. "The masks allowed us to reveal things about who we are as singers and as people," he said. This opportunity to showcase a diverse range of songs was an enriching experience for the group.

During the finale, emotional moments surfaced as the competition made them reflect on their journey and strengthened their bond. Wanyá remarked, "What made us more emotional than anything was the fact that we had overcome a situation that most people would bow out of. It was really hot in those suits, and we didn’t know if we were going to be able to pull off performances like the finale from the beginning." He emphasized how they transformed into a new group, facing challenges together as a unified entity.

Shawn echoed Wanyá’s sentiments, sharing that the experience reminded them of the energy they had built over 33 years. "It made us remember why we did this in the first place," he emphasized.

Looking forward, Boyz II Men plans to keep their momentum going in the upcoming year, with multiple tour dates scheduled through July. Nathan explained that being relevant to each other is their priority, highlighting the importance of maintaining their bond above all else.
