The Libertines Honor Buddy Holly and Play Love Cover with BBC Orchestra

Published February 4, 2024

The Libertines have recently graced the BBC Radio 2 with a nostalgic musical tribute. The band revisited the classics by covering Buddy Holly's 'That'll Be The Day' alongside the distinguished BBC Concert Orchestra. Bringing life to the keys was Ed Harcourt, enhancing the homage with his piano expertise.

Marking the remembrance of Holly's tragic passing on February 3, 1959, in a devastating plane crash, this performance was particularly poignant, coinciding with the rock 'n' roll icon's death anniversary. Alongside Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. 'The Big Bopper' Richardson also lost their lives on that fateful day, an event deeply etched in music history.

Adding to the session's eclectic mix, Pete Doherty, Carl BarĂ¢t, and their bandmates also delivered a rendition of 'Alone Again Or' by the band Love. This track finds its roots in Love's 1967 album 'Forever Changes', and The Libertines' version echoed through the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room for fans to savor.

Beyond the covers, The Libertines have been creating waves with the announcement of their forthcoming album 'All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade', scheduled for release on March 8. Preceding the album, their single 'Shiver' made its debut, drawing from personal moments the band experienced while in Jamaica, observing the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II amidst a hurricane.

The song 'Shiver' is tinged with reflections on the end of eras and the passage of iconic figures, with lyrics weaving in the imagery of the late monarch's funeral, capturing the complex emotions of the moment.

Currently, The Libertines are engaging audiences across the UK with a series of intimate club shows. Fans can catch the vibrant energy of their live performances at various venues, with the tour progressing through key cities.
