Donegal Man Fulfills 30-Year Dream of Meeting The Smoking Popes in Chicago
A 30-year aspiration was fulfilled for a Donegal man whose musical adventure began in a Letterkenny music shop, culminating in an unforgettable encounter with his favorite band in Chicago.
The Beginning of a Musical Journey
Robert Love, a former Donegal People's Press reporter, found his passion for The Smoking Popes tucked away in the bargain section of Letterkenny Music Centre, operated by the Harvey brothers. The year was 1996 when Love purchased the band's 'Born To Quit' album and instantly became a dedicated fan.
A Dedicated Fan's Dream Comes True
Although he was an ardent supporter, Love never had the chance to see The Smoking Popes in concert. However, his commitment to the music didn't falter, and he promised himself to one day attend their show. His opportunity arrived unexpectedly while visiting Chicago for work, not as a reporter, but as a successful medical PR executive.
With nothing to lose, Love reached out to the band on Facebook, hoping they had a performance scheduled. To his amazement, he received an invitation to a very intimate and special 30th-anniversary live vinyl recording session of 'Born To Quit' with an exclusive audience of only 50 people.
An Evening to Remember
At the event, the band gave a personal shout-out to Love, recognizing his 3,900-mile journey from Ireland, including a five-hour bus travel from the airport, to attend. In return, Love and the other attendees will have their names featured on the album sleeve and they all received a limited edition signed gig poster.
Robert Love described the experience as an exceptional evening he will always cherish. Back at home, his wife, Catherine Carson, eagerly awaits the unique keepsake he's bringing from his musical voyage.
