Windsor Musicians Shine with Juno Award Nominations

Published February 7, 2024

The 2024 Juno Awards, Canada's premier music awards show, is making headlines in Windsor as two local talents are in contention for top honors. Celebrating the best in the Canadian music industry, the nominations have brought excitement to the Windsor music scene, demonstrating the city's vibrant and diverse talent pool.

Rocking the Nominations

The Blue Stones, a rock duo with roots in Windsor, have been nominated for Rock Album of the Year for their album Pretty Monster. This is the third time the band, comprising vocalist/guitarist Tarek Jafar and drummer Justin Tessier, has been recognized by the Junos. Their unique sound and dynamic performances have earned them a place on the Rock Album of the Year list before, as well as a nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year.

Jazz in The Spotlight

Windsor-based Russ Macklem, making waves in the jazz genre, has also received a nomination for Jazz Album of the Year (Solo) for his live-recorded album, The South Detroit Connection. Macklem, a renowned trumpeter, believes the nomination validates the hard work and dedication of not only himself but the tight-knit community of musicians within Windsor and Detroit.

A Milestone and a Gathering

The Juno nominations are not just accolades but markers of progress for The Blue Stones who are currently working on a new album. For them, it's about being part of a larger community of musicians, some of whom they've played alongside on tours. As the awards night approaches, the duo looks forward to the special occasion, celebrating with other talented artists. Meanwhile, Macklem sees his nomination as a tribute to the collaborative spirit of Windsor's music scene, highlighting the essential role of supportive venues and recording companies like Phog Lounge and TQM Recording Co.

A Night of Anticipation

The Juno Award winners will be unveiled at a star-studded ceremony on March 24 at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, hosted by Canadian superstar Nelly Furtado. Windsor's music community and their supporters will be watching closely, hopeful for a victory that would spotlight the city's flourishing music culture.
