Smokey Robinson May Grace Glastonbury Festival With His Presence

Published March 13, 2024

The revered Motown sensation, Smokey Robinson, is potentially gearing up to deliver a soul-stirring performance at the renowned Glastonbury Festival. At the respectable age of 84, Robinson's illustrious career has spanned seven decades and it seems he's not done adding to his legacy just yet. Despite a lineup that remains under wraps and Glastonbury's rapidly approaching dates of June 26 to 30, the buzz is alive with possibilities.

Whispers of a Motown Icon at Glastonbury

Recent speculation had suggested Stevie Wonder might headline the festival; however, these rumors have calmed. Co-organizer Emily Eavis has expressed interest in Raye topping the bill. Amidst these talks, Robinson himself has hinted at a potential appearance at the legendary event held at Worthy Farm.

When prodded about his next UK gig, Robinson disclosed at Elton John’s Oscars soiree that discussions have been underway. 'We’ve been talking about that for the past two weeks — probably soon,' he elaborated, teasing the prospect of his performance.

'Absolutely' Excited for Glastonbury

Upon further questioning about Glastonbury being part of his plans, he acknowledged the conversations and shared his enthusiasm: 'I would 'absolutely' love to perform there.' Robinson's affection for the UK is no secret, as he reflected on past delightful experiences in the country.

Robinson, an American R&B and soul music powerhouse, is acclaimed for his songwriting, record producing, and executive career. He notably formed and led the Miracles from their genesis in 1955, then known as The Five Chimes, until his departure in 1972 to advance his executive role at Motown Records. His impact on music was forever immortalized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Michael Eavis previously teased a Glastonbury appearance by Robinson in 2007, which didn't materialize. Robinson has been active in North America, but if he agrees to take the stage at Glastonbury, it would mark his first UK show since Radio 2 Live In Hyde Park in 2013.

Rumors also swirl around potential performances by Coldplay, Dua Lipa, and Shania Twain at this year's festival.
