‘Tiny Boat Sessions’ Connects Music and Sailing in a Magical Way

Published December 17, 2023

Jordan Hanssen, an author, artist, and seasoned adventurer with extensive seafaring experience, has brought together the worlds of music and sailing through his innovative 'tinyboatsessions.' Hanssen, based in Seattle, has combined his love for both by filming musicians from various locations across the United States, all performing aboard small vessels.

Sailing with Songs

The 'tinyboatsessions' project involves Hanssen journeying to different ports, including visiting Humboldt Bay for the second time to capture performances by local musicians such as Noah Luvcult, Sequoia Rose, Turtle Goodwater, and more. Hanssen's own vessel or a borrowed boat provides the stage for these unique sessions, adding an element of adventure to the musical performances.

The Magic of the Moment

Hanssen believes that the project goes beyond filming, emphasizing that the true essence lies in the ephemeral 'tinyboatsession' itself, a shared moment of warmth and song. The receptivity and enthusiasm of the artists are what transform these encounters into memorable experiences. So far, he has filmed over 600 songs in seven 'seasons' which are available to enjoy online.

Origins During a Pandemic

Conceived in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began, the 'tinyboatsessions' were Hanssen's response to finding joy amidst uncertainty. Having witnessed an inspiring sight of a man playing the saxophone in a small boat, Hanssen was motivated to replicate and share that feeling of delight with others. Through the restrictions of the pandemic, his project found a way to connect and bring beauty to people's lives.

A Collection of Unique Performances

Hanssen has a rich history of encounters with artists of diverse musical backgrounds, including folk legends and international musicians. With his camera and rowboat named Clarabelle, he has documented an array of performances, each with its own story and setting.

Collaboration with the Community

Hanssen's collaborative spirit extends to the selection of artists, reaching out through social media and personal networks, including recommendations from fellow musicians. A boat, an artist, and a location are the simple ingredients that lead to the realization of a 'tinyboatsession.' Hanssen often rows or paddles with one hand while filming with his phone in the other, bringing a raw and authentic feel to the videos.

Local Musicians Share Their Experience

Artists who have participated in the project, like Turtle Goodwater and Sequoia Rose, express gratitude for the opportunity. Goodwater emphasizes the social aspect of music and the joy of performing in nature, while Rose appreciates the beautiful concept and the sense of adventure Hanssen brings. Their performance clips, along with others, add to the project's rich tapestry of musical sessions.

Environmental Consciousness and Future Endeavors

Hanssen is currently involved with a climate-friendly shipping company, Fairtransport, sailing aboard the engineless brigantine Tres Hombres. His commitment to the environment is demonstrated through this journey, shipping goods solely by sail power. Hanssen's life and work, an amalgamation of adventure, artistry, and environmental stewardship, continue to inspire and connect people in unexpected ways.
