ARKO Selection Ushers in An Eclectic Mix of Music, Theater, and Opera

Published January 4, 2024

Opening the year with a rich tapestry of cultural performances, ARKO Selection is excited to present its first slate of six unique shows from early to mid-January. This varied collection includes three immersive music concerts designed to induce meditation, two thought-provoking plays that shine light on female independence fighters, and one innovative opera that adds a twist to a classic tale.

Cultural Diversity Through Music and Theater

The six productions are part of a larger initiative, with 28 new repertoires backed by Arts Council Korea, a body dedicated to nurturing a wide spectrum of arts and cultural activities nationwide.

Innovative Concerts and Traditional Performances

The series begins with "Minyo Cello", set to unfold at the ARKO Arts Theater in Daehakro, Seoul. Here, audiences will be treated to Korean traditional folk melodies reinvented through the beautiful harmonies of five cellos and accompanying band music. Composer and cellist Lim Yi-hwan, also known as the Big Violin Player, is at the forefront of this unique fusion, blending jazz elements with Korean rhythms to showcase the cello's versatility.

The concert schedule continues with two traditional Korean musical experiences that offer audiences a moment of meditation and introspection. These performances delve into ancient tempos and rhythms, designed to provide a restorative break from the hustle of modern life. "Play of Water" further explores this theme with over 20 different percussion instruments complemented by dance, lighting, and video, all symbolically flowing together like water.

Theatrical Tributes to Female Pioneers

Next in the lineup are two plays that bring to light the personal narratives of female fighters who contributed to the independence movement. Through poignant storytelling, "Bari on the Hill" and "Dear Son" offer new perspectives on historical events, stressing the human emotions and struggles behind the icons.

A Dark Reimagining of Opera

Adding yet another layer to this artistic feast is the opera "3 and 1/2 A"—an adaption of "Cinderella" that delves into the deep-seated feelings of the famous fairy tale's oft-overlooked characters, her stepsisters. The production is a venture by the Ulsan Munsoo Opera Company and is scheduled to perform at the National Theater of Korea.
