On January 4, 2025, Canadian-American actor and Parkinson's disease advocate Michael J. Fox was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden during a ceremony at the White House. This prestigious recognition is one of the highest civilian honors in the United States, celebrating individuals for their achievements and contributions to society.

A Celebration at the White House

The award ceremony took place in the East Room of the White House on a cold Saturday afternoon. During this event, President Biden honored 19 distinguished individuals from various fields, including politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, and science. Among those celebrated were notable figures such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Denzel Washington, humanitarian Bono, and sports legends Lionel Messi and Magic Johnson.

Fox's Legacy of Advocacy

Michael J. Fox, who was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, has been a passionate advocate for Parkinson's research since his own diagnosis with the disease in 1991. He became a dual citizen of Canada and the United States. Fox is well-known for his roles in popular films and series, especially his part in the iconic Back to the Future franchise and his work in television shows like Family Ties and Spin City. Although he has stepped back from acting due to his health challenges, Fox continues to support advancements in Parkinson's treatment through his foundation.

Honoring a Beloved Actor

During the ceremony, President Biden praised Fox as “one of the most beloved actors of our time with remarkable wit and charm.” He emphasized Fox's tireless efforts in advocating for those affected by Parkinson's disease and for pushing forward vital research that seeks a potential cure. Biden highlighted Fox’s resilience, stating that he “warms hearts and captivates audiences” while inspiring hope in others.

A Humble Gratitude

In response to receiving the Medal of Freedom, Fox expressed his gratitude, describing the honor as “humbling” and beyond his expectations. He dedicated the award to all the patients, families, and researchers striving for a world where Parkinson’s disease can be overcome. His foundation, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, is recognized as the largest non-profit organization dedicated to funding impactful Parkinson's research, having raised over $2 billion to date.

This ceremony marked a historic moment, as President Biden stated it was his last opportunity to bestow the Medal of Freedom during his presidency, underscoring the significance of the event. Fox's contributions to entertainment and advocacy, along with the stories of the other honorees, were highlighted as integral to shaping the culture of America.
