The Schubertiade Festival Revives Schubert's Legacy in 2024 With a Focus on Vocal Music

Published January 28, 2024

The Austrian composer Franz Schubert, known for his profound contributions to classical music, is once again celebrated in the 2024 Schubertiade festival. Underappreciated in his time, Schubert left behind an abundant and rich body of work despite his untimely death at just 31 years of age. The festival, an annual event since its inception over 18 years ago, runs from January 26 through February 9 across several cities.

The socio-political environment of the 19th century muted Schubert's public acclaim, with the Congress of Vienna's restrictions hampering public performances. Yet, the middle-class rise and larger homes paved the way for musical soirées, giving rise to gatherings that contributed to Schubert's posthumous recognition.

The 2024 festival, under the artistic direction of founder Raz Kohn, coincides with Schubert's birthday, offering an escape from Europe's winter for participating international musicians. Among the featured artists is the renowned Austrian tenor Daniel Johannsen, collaborating with Israeli vocalists in performances that span from Rishon LeZion to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Vocal music takes center stage in the festival, reflecting Schubert's renowned German Lieder—songs that marked a shift in classical music and were crucial to Schubert's lifetime fame. This year's programming showcases a sought-after rendition of Schubert's last sonata, the sonorous B flat major, alongside performances of his secular choral works—an area sometimes overshadowed by his religious compositions.

Across various venues, audiences will enjoy a diverse set of Schubert's creations, from solo sonatas to four-part male voice arrangements, illustrating the festival's renewed commitment to explore the breadth of Schubert's mastery. It's a chance to relive the intimate origins of his music and to spotlight Schubert's rightful place in the classical music realm.
