Acclaimed A Capella Group Take 6 Prepares for an Enthralling Beverly Hills Performance

Published March 21, 2024

When you immerse yourself in the vibrant harmonies of Take 6 during their live performances, it's easy to be convinced that a hidden band is enhancing their incredible voices. However, this acclaimed a capella group needs no such thing; their vocal capabilities alone conjure the sound of a full ensemble, mesmerizing audiences since the late 1980s with a unique blend of jazz, R&B, pop, and gospel music.

A Brief History and Monumental Achievements

Take 6's journey began back in 1986 at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. They were originally called the Gentleman’s Estate Quartet, a name they would eventually change after creating their signature style that sidesteps the use of traditional musical instruments. With 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, a Soul Train Award, and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame under their belt, Take 6 has earned the praise of legends like Quincy Jones, who heralded them as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet.”

New Music and Philanthropic Ventures

On March 23, during a special show at the Bram Goldsmith Theater at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, Take 6 will not only entertain but also share an exclusive preview of their new recording titled “Rhapsody,” a pure jazz collection featuring classics such as “Stardust,” “God Bless the Child,” and “Giant Steps.” But the night isn't just about showcasing their artistry; it'll be a celebration of their 2024 partnership with Music Cares and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as the group introduces their effort to give back through music.

A Mission Melded with Music

The partnership with St. Jude reflects the group's commitment to contributing more than just musical entertainment. By integrating awareness for St. Jude's mission into their events and donating proceeds from ticket sales to the organization, Take 6 is leveraging their platform to have an impact on children's lives. With no fixed fundraising goal, they encourage fans to support in any capacity they're moved to, aligning with the greater purpose of finding cures and saving children affected by cancer.

Continued Relevance and Innovation

Despite their longstanding success, the members of Take 6 are humbled and somewhat surprised at their continued relevance in a changing musical landscape. They credit their love for music and their adaptability for their longevity, which even after 44 years of performing still garners roughly 120 show dates annually. It’s this passion that has helped them remain a beloved staple in a cappella music while influencing the rise of similar groups and changing the landscape of vocal performance.

Acknowledging Legacy and Looking Forward

Induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame is not just a nod to their past successes but a symbol of their enduring resonance with fans and their contribution to music history. As Take 6 gears up for their Beverly Hills performance, they plan to deliver a set list that will span their extensive repertoire, ensuring that long-time fans and newcomers alike experience the depth and joy of their music.
