Published February 26, 2024

A talented ensemble of Donegal boys recently showcased their extraordinary musical talents as part of the acclaimed Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI) during two sold-out concerts at Belfast's SSE Arena.

Youthful Excellence

These young musicians hail from St Patrick's NS, Letterkenny, and joined their peers in the dynamic 'Peace Prom' event, featuring a staggering lineup of 130 young musicians, complemented by a 6,000-member youth choir from across Ireland. They shared the stage with both Ulster Scot and Irish dancers, bridging cultural expressions through the universal language of music and dance. Additionally, enhancing the orchestra's sound were 25 pipers and drummers, directed by the world-renowned highland piper Grahame Harris.

Uplifting Performances

The audience in Belfast was treated to 90 minutes of exhilarating music and dance that comprised the Peace Proms concerts, leaving an indelible mark on all who attended. These special performances celebrated the spirit of peace, unity, and tolerance that the CBOI represents. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly MLA and Junior Minister Aisling Reilly MLA were honored guests at one of the performances, symbolizing the cross-community support for the orchestra's mission.

A Commitment to Harmony

Since its establishment in 1995, the CBOI has not only been at the helm of music education but also a leading force for social harmony throughout Ireland. The Peace Proms 2024 stand as a shining example of the talent and dedication of young musicians and performers. The concert series began in Limerick and traveled to Dublin, Belfast, and finally Waterford, featuring over 35,000 children under the baton of esteemed conductor Greg Beardsell and led by violinist Richie Dunne.

The orchestra's performances both domestically and internationally, including venues like London's Royal Albert Hall and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, have earned standing ovations and global acclaim. With their art, they consistently share powerful messages of reconciliation and hope.
