Jay-Z Suggests Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Could Be Renamed

Published January 3, 2025

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, located in Cleveland, Ohio, has been increasingly recognizing artists beyond the traditional rock genre. In recent years, notable inductees have included acts that represent various musical styles. For instance, in 2024, A Tribe Called Quest and Cher were honored, while Missy Elliott was inducted in 2023, and Eminem in 2022.

The museum's chairman, John Sykes, shared his thoughts on whether the name should be altered to reflect the broader range of music. In an interview with Vulture, he explained, “Rather than throwing the name out, the Hall is doing a better job of communicating to people where rock and roll came from and what it’s truly about. Once they hear it that way, they understand.”

Sykes recalled a thought-provoking conversation he had with rapper Jay-Z during Jay-Z’s induction. "I was so excited to celebrate his contribution to music. When I told him how honored I was, he responded, ‘Rock is dead. It should be called the Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame.’ I replied, ‘Well, hip-hop is rock and roll.’ He disagreed, and this led to a deeper discussion about the origins of rock and roll. I emphasized that great artists like Little Richard, Otis Redding, and Chuck Berry laid the foundation for rock and roll, which in turn shaped hip-hop sounds. Eventually, Jay-Z acknowledged my points, and he attended the ceremony, which made me feel that we had successfully communicated the inclusivity of rock and roll.”

However, some notable groups, such as Chic, Iron Maiden, and The Smiths, continue to await their induction, showcasing that the Hall still has a diverse mixture of genres to approach in its selections.
