Published February 23, 2024

For KESTA Dowridge, better known by his stage name Missionary Don, music is more than just a career—it's a divine vocation. This Guyanese Dancehall/Reggae recording artist's unwavering conviction that he's destined for musical greatness is matched only by his determination to leave a lasting legacy for his children.

Early Life and Bold Beginnings

Born and raised in the 'A' Field of Sophia, Georgetown, KESTA's journey into music commenced with unprecedented boldness. At the tender age of 10, a spur-of-the-moment decision saw him take the stage at a church concert, marking the inception of his lifelong commitment to the performing arts. KESTA's childhood audacity laid the foundation for a spirited musical pursuit that would soon become his defining purpose.

Rising Through the Ranks

With his mother's encouragement, KESTA took the plunge into the music industry. His first major triumph came in 2010 at the Sophia Community Centre during an event by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, where he emerged victorious among 60 other singers. His momentum didn't stop there; in 2011, he snagged another first-place victory with his performance of 'Alright Then' at a Sophia Village Day competition. His collaborative song 'Nuh leff mi rum' with chutney artist 'Lifeline' further expanded his musical repertoire.

Awards and Accolades

KESTA's talent continued to be recognized over the years, with significant accolades such as 'Artist of the Year' in 2014, awarded by Enigmas Entertainment Group for the song 'Love must be in you and me.' Come 2023, his persistent efforts earned him a vacation package for reaching the finals at a talent event. His devotion to writing music, sometimes penning eight to ten songs a day, has resulted in an impressive array of singles that showcase his versatility and creative flair.

Music as a Calling

For KESTA, music isn't just an interest, it's an innate calling. 'It's a calling in my DNA; it's a natural thing that lives within me,' he states, hinting at an intrinsic force that propels his artistic journey. Beyond personal motivation, he sees himself as a guiding light for the youth in his community, aspiring to lead by example and foster an environment where young individuals can thrive and contribute positively to society.

Advocacy for Local Artistry

KESTA is a staunch advocate for the support of local artists, calling upon leaders to pave the way and protect their creations through copyright laws. His vision extends to an improved dynamic between young entertainers and authority figures, hoping for collaborative efforts that will benefit the creative community.

A Balanced Life Beyond Music

While music is his primary passion, KESTA is a versatile individual with certifications in air conditioning and refrigeration and interests in real estate. Intent on expanding his skill set, he plans to further his education in engineering, showcasing his multifaceted ambitions.
