INFINITE's Nam Woo-hyun Discusses His Battle with a Rare Cancer and Newfound Musical Perspective
INFINITE's vocalist Nam Woo-hyun has shared his personal experience with a serious health challenge. The South Korean artist recently revealed his diagnosis with a rare type of cancer, known as gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), that led to an urgent surgical procedure earlier this year.
Battling a Rare Cancer
During an interview, Nam Woo-hyun detailed the urgency of his situation, which pushed him to hasten his fan meetings and performances before his operation in April. It was during this surgery that he understood the severity of his condition, with the cancer being more widespread than initially anticipated.
The aftermath of his surgical intervention was grueling. Woo-hyun mentioned he was unable to drink water for nearly three weeks post-surgery and was left with a significant reminder of his ordeal—a 20-centimeter scar across his stomach. The physical toll also included having to wear a blood bag during his recovery.
The Road to Recovery
Although the path to recovery was daunting, the care he received in the hospital, especially from the nurses, became a source of inspiration for him. This support was instrumental in his desire to bounce back, create new music, and continue pursuing his career as a performer. Woo-hyun expressed feeling as though he had been given a second chance at life following his surgery, which has also deepened his personal reflections and musicality.
The singer acknowledged that the surgery might impact his vocal abilities and has experienced breathing issues when performing. Nonetheless, he is determined to move forward in his career.
Anticipating New Beginnings
In spite of the health setbacks, Nam Woo-hyun is gearing up to release his first full-length studio album, 'Whitree'. Moreover, he has solo concerts scheduled at the end of December in Seoul. The album and upcoming performances mark a significant comeback for Woo-hyun following his battle with GIST.
Earlier, INFINITE made their return with a new mini-album, marking their first set of songs since their last single release two years prior. This comeback reenergizes the group and their fans as they look forward to more music and performances.
