Spain Introduces Discounted Live Music Tickets for Under-30s

Published November 25, 2023

In an effort to make live cultural events more accessible to the younger population, the Spanish government has rolled out a program granting discounted tickets to young adults. This initiative targets individuals aged between 18 and 30, offering reduced pricing for a variety of performances including live music, festivals, theatre, circus, and dance shows.

Details on the Discount Scheme

Youth in Spain can look forward to discounts ranging from €5 to €20, which translates to approximately £4 to £17. The program is not entirely new but is an expansion of a previous version that was available to those up to 25 years old. The key improvement in the current offering is the removal of restrictions on when the discounted tickets can be purchased, thereby allowing for year-round benefits.

Several festivals such as Sónar, Vida, Cruïlla, Embassa’t and Canet Rock have already registered with the new scheme. These collaborations between the government and cultural institutions aim to boost the attendance of young audiences at live events.

Government Investment and Culture Budget

The initiative has a dedicated initial budget of €700,000 to support the discounted ticket prices. The culture minister of Catalunya, Natàlia Garriga, has mentioned the government's commitment to investing in culture, hinting at the possibility of increasing the budget if there's a high demand for the tickets among the youth.

Spain's approach is part of a larger European trend to re-engage young people with the arts post-pandemic. Similar to Spain's ticket discounts, Germany has launched a nationwide culture pass allowing 18-year-olds to spend €200 on various cultural activities, which has seen significant uptake by over half a million people.
