UConn Waterbury Students Enjoy Free ‘Hairspray’ Performance at Palace Theater

Published January 18, 2024

In a generous act of community outreach, the Palace Theater in Waterbury extended a special invitation to approximately 150 students and faculty members from the University of Connecticut Waterbury campus. This rare opportunity afforded them a chance to witness a free matinee performance of the lively musical 'Hairspray' this past Wednesday.

Unexpected Weather Leads to Unique Opportunity

The gesture of goodwill came about when an unforeseen dip in ticket sales occurred, following inclement weather on Tuesday. Seizing the moment, Palace Theater's CEO, Frank Tavera, recognized this as an opportunity to fill the unexpected available seats while also fostering ties with the local academic community. Tavera expressed his intent to not only offer a memorable experience to the students but also to spark an interest that would encourage them to return for future shows.

A Win-Win for Students and Theater

The unique experience provided the students with a glimpse into the world of Broadway, fostering cultural enrichment without the need for travel or expense. The initiative also showcased the Palace Theater's commitment to community engagement, strengthening relationships with nearby institutions and corporate sponsors alike.
