Saxophonists Bring Music to Santa Cruz in Annual Pacific Avenue Concert

Published December 23, 2023

Downtown Santa Cruz resonated with the deep, rich melodies of baritone saxophones over the weekend, as nearly 20 saxophonists gathered to charm the pedestrians with their music. The musicians, including Woody Parker, Jeff Bell, Aaron Danen, and Alder Blackmun, were part of the festive ensemble that performed at the 'Saxes on the Mall' event on Pacific Avenue. This annual concert has become a cherished tradition amongst locals and visitors alike.

A Decade-Long Musical Tradition

Steve Gray, the conductor of the saxophone choir, kept the decade-old tradition alive as they played a range of saxophones from soprano to baritone. Positioned in front of the O'Neill Surf Shop, the group not only spread holiday cheer but also collected donations for a noble cause. This year, the funds raised are set to support two music scholarships for aspiring high school saxophone players in the area. These scholarships honor the legacy of Santa Cruz Jazz Society founder Steve Newman and Saxes on the Mall's longtime participant David Shoaf.

Community Support and Participation

The 'Saxes on the Mall' concert is not just a musical event but also a communal gathering that involves the town's people in the spirit of giving. Those interested in contributing to the scholarship fund can reach out to Steve Gray at his email address. As the saxophonists delivered their midday serenade, Pacific Avenue shoppers were seen navigating around the performance, enjoying the unexpected soundtrack to their shopping experience.
