Sydney Festival Cancels Highly Anticipated Summerground Music Event

Published November 30, 2023

The Sydney Festival has unexpectedly cancelled one of its main attractions, a grand three-day music fest named Summerground, which was set to happen in Tumbalong Park from January 5 to 7. Aimed to jumpstart the upcoming year's festivities, Summerground promised appearances from popular acts such as Dojo Cuts, King Stingray, the Teskey Brothers, and the Brand New Heavies from the UK.

Summerground: An Oasis of Music that Won't Be

Festival director Olivia Ansell had previously touted the event as a 'three-day luscious summer oasis' perfect for families and friends to enjoy stellar performances in a summer vibe. Marketed as an affordable, family-friendly option, Summerground was offering one-day passes priced at just $89, in an effort to make the festival accessible during times of economic pressure.

Cancellation Due to Rising Costs and Shifting Trends

Despite the enthusiasm, the festival faced a sudden cancellation. The Sydney Festival team cited shifting consumer behaviors, the increased cost of living, and growing operational costs as challenges that have affected music festivals across the country, with Summerground being no exception. A formal statement assured that ticket holders would receive full refunds and reiterated the festival's commitment to live music, promising a variety of other musical performances within the 2024 program.

This decision came as a blow not only to music fans but also to the artists looking forward to gracing the Sydney stage. The broader Sydney Festival, which spans from January 5 to 28, will go ahead with more than 130 planned events. More updates and comments from festival management are expected to follow.
