‘City of A Million Dreams’ Highlights New Orleans Culture at Annual Film Festival

Published December 1, 2023

In Los Angeles, Torrence Brannon-Reese fondly remembers the vibrant jazz funerals of his New Orleans childhood. These celebratory processions, full of music and dance, pay homage to the departed on their way to the beyond. Brannon-Reese, now the head of the nonprofit FAMLI which focuses on youth mentoring and leadership development, is bringing a slice of this culture to the city with the screening of a documentary that dives deep into this tradition.

Jazz Documentary Leads Film Festival Lineup

The documentary 'City of A Million Dreams,' directed by Jason Berry, captures the spirit of New Orleans jazz funerals. It will feature at the 12th annual I've Known Rivers Film Festival on December 3 at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum from 5 to 8 p.m., continuing until December 9 at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in Leimert Park. The festival aims to raise funds for FAMLI while celebrating African cultural retention through dance and music.

Exploring the Roots of New Orleans Culture

'City of A Million Dreams' is set against the backdrop of New Orleans, a city Brannon-Reese describes as deeply connected to its African heritage. He highlights the significance of places like Congo Square, historically a gathering spot for enslaved Africans. Despite the harsh realities of slavery, they found moments of liberation through their vibrant expressions of music and dance.

Following the documentary, attendees will be privy to an in-depth round table discussion featuring Berry, choreographer Monique Moss, editor Tim Watson, production designer Simonette Berry, cinematographer Harris Done, and jazz educator Michael White.

A Showcase of International Struggle and Expression

The film festival will also present the documentary 'Bobi Wine, The People's President,' profiling Ugandan musician-activist Bobi Wine and his political struggle. It will be shown from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center.

Live Music to Enhance the Festival Experience

Apart from film screenings, the festival will also host live performances by Brannon-Reese's band, Everything with Soul, bringing the lively New Orleans sound to the audience directly.
