Shawn Mendes Discusses Speculation About His Sexuality

Published October 30, 2024

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes has recently addressed the ongoing speculation about his sexuality, stating that he is still in the process of figuring it out. He emphasized the importance of understanding that such personal matters can feel intrusive, especially under public scrutiny.

'I'm Just Figuring It Out,' He Tells Fans in Emotional Video

During his For Friends and Family Only tour show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, the 26-year-old artist opened up to his audience. "There’s this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long," he said, reflecting on how he has been in the public eye since he was just 15.

Experts have indicated that when individuals experience public scrutiny regarding their sexuality, it can negatively affect their mental health and may hinder their personal journey of self-discovery. Mendes expressed that the speculation surrounding his sexuality has often "felt like an intrusion" into something deeply personal.

He further stated, "The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes, and I know other times, and it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that." Mendes's honesty resonated with many, and he went on to perform his song The Mountain, which includes themes related to his sexuality.

Omid Razavi, the executive director at It Gets Better Canada, praised Mendes for sparking an important conversation that youth especially need to hear from celebrities.

Ongoing Rumors Surrounding Mendes' Sexuality

The speculation regarding Mendes’ sexuality has persisted for years. In a Snapchat post from when he was 17, Mendes responded to comments suggesting he gave off a "gay vibe" by stating, "First of all, I'm not gay. Second of all, it shouldn't make a difference if I was or if I wasn't."

Years later, he discussed how frustrating the speculation can be, expressing concern for friends who are part of the LGBTQ+ community but have not yet come out publicly.

Razavi mentioned that such public scrutiny denies individuals the necessary space to explore their identity in a healthy manner. Pressuring someone to openly identify themselves before they are ready can harm their mental well-being.

Why Speculation Can Be Harmful

Other public figures have also faced similar pressures regarding their sexuality. For instance, actor Kit Connor, known for his role in the series Heartstopper, found himself compelled to come out as bisexual due to speculation and social media pressure.

Similarly, singer Billie Eilish faced intense speculation regarding her sexuality when accusations of "queerbaiting" arose after a music video aired. Her brother attributed this public scrutiny to the pressure she faced to define her identity in a way that felt unjust.

Discussions about someone's sexuality, as noted by Razavi, can be damaging. He pointed out that identity and sexuality often evolve, and being forced into a label can feel permanent, preventing individuals from accurately expressing their true selves. There is a societal assumption of heterosexuality that can lead to judgment and stigma for those who identify differently, complicating their journey of self-discovery.

As Shawn Mendes continues his career, many hope he is given the space he needs to express himself authentically through his music and personal life. Razavi concluded by stating that he hopes Mendes can find his path without unnecessary pressure.
