GCVI Students Harmonize for Donkeys at Upcoming Charity Concert

Published January 19, 2024

Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute's music department has struck a chord of compassion with its upcoming charity event. A cohort of 60 students is fine-tuning their skills for a heartfelt performance, supporting the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, a charity close to their hearts which previously donated two guitars to their music classes.

A Night of Classic Tunes

Preparations are underway for Saturday night's benefit concert where the students will cover the iconic album Rumors by Fleetwood Mac. The entire performance is slated to take place in the school's own auditorium, bringing together a diverse group of budding musicians.

In a unique collaboration, GCVI's students will also be joined on stage by Mayor Cam Guthrie, showcasing his drumming talent on songs like Second-Hand News and Dreams. The inclusion of the Mayor, who participated in the previous year's concert too, has generated excitement among the students and added a community spirit to the event.

Music, Unity, and Compassion

Inspired by the generous donation from the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, the music classes decided to give back through this benefit concert. From a list of 15 potential albums, the collective student body chose Fleetwood Mac's Rumors as their performance piece. According to music teacher Lane Osborne, the selection process was democratic and the outcome reflects the students' passion.

The show promises a blend of beginners sharing the stage with more seasoned peers. It represents an inspiring collaboration that transcends skill levels, featuring students who commenced their musical journeys only months prior, and those who have honed their talents further.

With hopes to surpass last year's success, the concert operates on a 'pay-what-you-can' basis, making it an accessible event for all to enjoy. Last year, the concert raised $2,000, and the music department anticipates an even more successful turnout this time.

The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. following the doors opening at 6:30 p.m., welcoming attendees to an evening of music that promises to be both entertaining and impactful.
