Soulwax Unleashes New Music and Striking Stage Presence on 2024 Tour
Soulwax, the famed dance-punk band from Belgium, has launched an array of new songs along with a stunning stage setup during their 2024 tour across the UK and Europe. Fans witnessed these innovations firsthand during a series of live performances that mark the band's return after a five-year hiatus.
Electric Atmosphere in Concert Venues
The tour began in Europe and made its way to the UK, culminating in an electrifying performance at The Roundhouse in London. At this iconic venue, the Dewaele brothers, Stephen and David, were accompanied by an impressive live production. They were joined onstage by three drummers, enhancing the rhythmic foundation, along with a talented ensemble of musicians on synthesizers and guitars.
In line with previous tours supporting albums such as 'From Deewee' and 'Essential', the three-drummer setup remained a constant. However, the duo introduced a darker, more cyberpunk aesthetic to their performance, trading in their traditional white attire for an all-black ensemble. This shift in style was reflected not only in the band's appearance but also in their fresh take on previous hits and the ambiance of their newly unveiled tracks.
New Soundscapes Revealed
The band kicked off their set with 'Hot Like Sahara,' a new song that harkens back to the band's rock roots before diving into darker, more science fiction-inspired tones. The set included additional new songs such as 'Idiots In Love' with its paranoid post-punk vibe, 'New Earth Time' which drew in the crowd with its aggressive synth-driven rave-rock, and 'Polaris,' a track that offered a respite amid the set with its tranquil melodies.
David Dewaele had previously discussed the band's creative process, stating that the powerful live setup of three drummers was conceptualized alongside the album 'From Deewee' and the notion would carry forward into their new material. Emphasizing the success and enjoyment of this arrangement, the Dewaele brothers expressed eagerness to expand on this creative path with their friends and fellow bandmates.
Post-show, the duo continued the festivities with a more intimate afterparty as 2ManyDJs at The Moth Club in Hackney. Looking forward, fans can anticipate the release of Soulwax's sixth studio album, with more details and additional tour dates to be revealed in due course.
The Dewaele brothers are also set to present their Despacio soundsystem, in collaboration with James Murphy. Aside from that, 2ManyDJs is set to perform at significant events, including Field Day as part of All Points East. The previous year also saw 2ManyDJs celebrate the 20th anniversary of the influential ‘As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt.2’.
