Published January 27, 2024

Preparations are concluding for the upcoming St. David's Day celebration set to take place at Plaza Mezquita in Benalmadena on Friday, March 1, promising to be a vivid showcase of Welsh culture.

Choir From Rhondda Valleys to Perform

This year’s festivities are particularly exciting, featuring the renowned Côr Meibion Morlais, a choir hailing from the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales. Through persistent efforts involving numerous emails, phone calls, and determined persuasion, the event organizers have secured the choir's performance, adding a touch of choral authenticity to the day.

Côr Meibion Morlais boasts a heritage dating to 1928 and consists of about 35 members from diverse backgrounds and professions. Ages in the group span from under 25 to over 70, showcasing a unique blend of experience and youth, all bonded by their passion for singing. Their repertoire is varied, encompassing opera choruses, religious hymns, folk tunes, jazz, pop songs, and musical theatre, with a pronounced Welsh influence dominating their selections.

Local Acts Join the Celebration

The event will also feature a range of popular performers from the Costa del Sol, who are donating their talents to support the local cancer hospice charity, Fundación Cudeca. Esteemed performers such as Costa Soul Singers, Ricky Lavazza, and Lucy Pardoe are among the many set to entertain attendees. The day promises a mix of live music covering various genres, ensuring there's something to enjoy for everyone.

The festivities commence at 1pm and are expected to wind down around 9pm. The organizers encourage the community to come out in support, enjoy the merriments, and help raise funds for a noble cause. Alongside the fun, tickets for Côr Meibion Morlais' upcoming concert on March 6 at Casa de la Cultura in Arroyo de la Miel will be available, with proceeds also benefitting Cudeca.
