Yellowcard's Ryan Key Discusses the Band's Comeback and Upcoming Performance at ALTer Ego Festival

Published January 2, 2024

Yellowcard, the rock band known for hits like 'Ocean Avenue,' is experiencing a resurgence after initially disbanding in 2016. The band's vocalist and guitarist, Ryan Key, shared insights about the band's unexpected return to the spotlight and their approach to their revival.

Ryan Key on Band's Initial Fears

When Yellowcard was presented with the opportunity for a headline tour, the band members were overwhelmed. The size of the venues, including amphitheaters they hadn't played before, struck them with a mix of fear and excitement. Key remembered playing at a smaller venue in his hometown, but was surprised to see their tour booked at much larger venues like the 5,500-seat Daily's Place. Their concern of playing to a partially filled audience quickly dissipated as both shows at Daily's Place quickly sold out.

The Catalyst for Yellowcard's Reunion

The reunion's spark came from an invitation to play at Riot Fest in Chicago, suggested by their long-time booking agent Corrie Christopher. This marked their return to the stage and signaled the start of Yellowcard's rejuvenation. Success at Riot Fest opened the possibility of new opportunities which they approach carefully now, as more mature individuals.

Yellowcard's Musical Journey and Breakup

Formed in 1997, Yellowcard rose to fame with their major label album 'Ocean Avenue.' Over time, the band faced several changes and challenges, from label switches to a mid-career break. As their situation became more demanding personally and professionally, they decided to part ways in 2016.

A New Chapter with 'Childhood Eyes'

Yellowcard's return has rekindled their musical creativity, prompting the release of a new five-song EP, 'Childhood Eyes,' which revisits the energetic pop-rock sound they're known for. Key reflects on the contrast of the band's earlier sound to the darker tone of their last two albums before the breakup.

Anticipation for ALTer Ego Festival

Now, the band is set to bring their renewed energy to the stage at the ALTer Ego festival on January 13, where they'll be performing alongside many other iconic acts like Paramore and The Black Keys. Ryan Key promises audiences a polished and passionate performance that reflects the band's growth and professionalism over the years.
