Monterey Park Honors Mass Shooting Victims One Year Later

Published January 25, 2024

Monterey Park has solemnly marked one year since the tragic mass shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. A candlelight vigil was held at the city hall where community members and leaders came together to remember the 11 lives lost on January 21, 2023.

Remembering the Victims

Flowers and the names of those who perished were displayed, a stark reminder of the toll of gun violence. Speakers at the vigil paid tribute to the victims and called for action on stricter gun laws.

Community Hero

Brandon Tsay, who disarmed the shooter and likely prevented further tragedy, was honored for his bravery. He spoke at the vigil, emphasizing the community's resilience and determination to strive for a future free from gun violence.

A Night of Healing

The event continued at the World Seafood restaurant in Alhambra, where attendees danced, reclaiming the joyous activity that had been so violently disrupted a year prior. The dancing served not only as entertainment but as a statement of the community's unwavering spirit.

Mental Health and Community Support

Efforts to provide mental health resources and community support have been a focus since the shooting. Prominent figures like former Monterey Park Mayor and current Rep. Judy Chu have been advocating for change, providing support at the federal level for gun violence prevention strategies.

Looking Forward

The message of the night was clear: Monterey Park is a community committed to healing, remembrance, and action towards a safer future. The collective display of resilience and unity was a powerful testament to the strength found in togetherness and the shared pursuit of hope.
