Billie Joe Armstrong Discusses Emo Revival and Experiences in British Culture

Published December 27, 2023

Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman of the iconic punk band Green Day, has shared his perspective on the resurgence of emo music and how recent trends in music discovery play a role. During a conversation with The Guardian, accompanied by his bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, Armstrong expressed his surprise at the quick return of emo popularity, humorously noting the breakup of famous emo group My Chemical Romance as if it had just happened.

Emo's Resurgence and Digital Influence

Referring to the recent emo resurgence, Armstrong said, "Emo was dead – then just five years later we’re having emo club nights. Like, aren’t you supposed to wait another five years for this? My Chemical Romance just broke up!" He went on to explain his observations about the role of streaming services and the viral nature of social media platforms like TikTok in bringing older music back into the limelight. He pointed out bands like the Walters, who gained traction after breaking up, and the Deftones, who saw a spike in popularity on TikTok despite being veterans in the rock genre.

Armstrong's Love for British Football

In another part of the interview, Armstrong shed light on his experiences immersing himself in British culture, particularly through football. While in London recording Green Day's album 'Saviors' with producer Rob Cavallo, he made time to attend a variety of football matches. Armstrong visited stadiums of teams including Arsenal, Leyton Orient, and Fulham; he also enjoyed the passionate fan environment at Millwall's ground, The Den. Emphasizing football's cultural significance, he compared the experience to a rock concert and shared his intention to explore teams beyond the globally recognized ones, seeking the raw energy of lower-division games.

The new Green Day album, 'Saviors', is expected to release on January 19, under Warner/Reprise. Additionally, Green Day recently offered fans a glimpse into the creation process of their new single, 'Dilemma'.
