Marc Cohn Reveals Parkinson's Diagnosis After Five Years

Published February 1, 2025

Marc Cohn, a renowned artist known for his hit song "Walking In Memphis," has publicly announced that he is living with Parkinson's disease, five years after receiving the diagnosis. The 65-year-old GRAMMY-winning musician shared this news with his 14.6K followers on Instagram.

In his heartfelt message, Cohn explained why he chose to keep his diagnosis private for so long. He mentioned that while his family had known about the condition, he needed time to process the "unsettling news" on his own.

"Hi everyone. Marc here… I feel like it's time to tell you, my fans, what many of my colleagues, friends, and family already know. About five years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease," said Cohn.

Despite his diagnosis, he expressed optimism and determination, stating, "I'm doing everything I can to stave off Parkinson's progression, and with those efforts, I have been able to continue playing shows for you all." Cohn emphasized his commitment to performing for as long as he can.

"Some nights have been more difficult than others, but there were moments of healing and deep gratitude for my ability to stand at the microphone and continue to do the job I love so much," he wrote.

Cohn reflected on the importance of each moment, adding, "These past few years have been a time of reflection and a reminder of the preciousness of every moment." He thanked his fans for their unwavering support and streaming of his music.

In his post, Cohn expressed a desire to view his diagnosis as "an opportunity to learn." He said, "Thank you for making my music part of your daily lives. I feel like I've been a guest at your weddings, your delivery rooms, your first dances, and all the passages we all go through. This is just another passage… another opportunity to learn another dance."

He concluded his message with an invitation to meet fans on the road, stating, "I plan on continuing to do shows for as long as possible. Come meet us on the road somewhere. With love and gratitude, Marc."

According to the Cleveland Clinic, individuals with Parkinson's typically have a near-normal life expectancy; however, the disease does affect brain function over time.

Marc Cohn is also known for his special performance at the wedding of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. During their high-profile wedding on July 16, 2022, Cohn had a memorable moment where he surprised Ben Affleck by performing two songs that held special meaning for the couple.

In his tribute, he recalled how he was called by Jennifer Lopez to sing "The Things We've Handed Down" and "True Companion" per her request. Cohn described the wedding as a magical celebration, noting that there is nothing better for a songwriter than witnessing how their work impacts others.

With the recent news of his health condition, Marc Cohn continues to inspire audiences with his resilience and passion for music, demonstrating a commitment to live fully despite life's challenges.
