Spotify Introduces Music Video Feature in Beta
Spotify has expanded its services to include music videos with the introduction of a new feature in beta mode. This allows users to watch videos of their favorite songs directly through the platform. Initially, this feature includes a limited selection of tracks from artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Aluna, and Asake. It marks the company's steps towards creating a more immersive music experience, according to Sten Garmark, Spotify's global head of consumer experience. He additionally mentioned that the music video catalog is projected to grow to the thousands.
How to Access Videos on Spotify
Accessing music videos on Spotify is straightforward. Users will see a 'Switch to Video' button on the Now Playing screen of supported tracks. By tapping this icon, the song will restart, and the music video will play in the display's center. For a full-screen experience, users can rotate their iOS or Android device. There's also an option to switch back to audio-only mode at any time.
Availability and Subscription Requirements
At launch, the music video feature is available in 11 markets, including the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. The choice of these markets was strategic, based on size and local content support. To enjoy music videos, users must have a Spotify Premium subscription and can access the feature on both mobile devices and larger screens like desktop and TV.
Spotify's Video Content Endeavors
Although Spotify is primarily known for audio streaming, it has ventured into several video formats, supporting video podcasts and artist-focused short clips called 'Clips.' With the new music video feature, Spotify aims to further bridge the gap between artists and listeners, creating more fan engagement opportunities.
