BYU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Voices Serenade With 'L.O.V.E.' Show
The Brigham Young University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Voices brought the theme of love to life with their show 'L.O.V.E.' at the concert hall in the BYU Music Building on February 13. The performance showcased a series of musical numbers, all expressing different facets of love. This event marked one of the many instances where the university's vibrant music scene could be witnessed in person.
Exploring the Joy of Jazz
According to Nelson Schnepf, a computer science major and singer in the Jazz Voices group, discovering events and clubs on campus such as this concert is important for enjoying university life. Schnepf encourages students to venture out and get involved with campus activities. His own experience after attending a Jazz Voices concert led him to audition and become part of this dynamic ensemble.
Dallin Jepsen, a drummer in the Jazz Ensemble and commercial music major, finds his participation in the group to be the fulfillment of a long-held dream. He emphasized the unique expressiveness of jazz and its capacity to feel new and alive with each performance, thanks to the improvisational nature of this music style.
The Ensembles' Community Spirit
Hayley Kirkland, the director of Jazz Voices, expressed her admiration for the dedication and energy of the students. Kirkland pointed out that the complexity and vigor of jazz require a high level of commitment, which has brought the members closer together, forging strong communal bonds within the group.
The camaraderie and shared passion for music not only unite the students but also establish a welcoming and supportive atmosphere according to Kirkland. It's not just about mastering the challenging pieces but also about the friendships that develop through the collective endeavor.
Both the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Voices represent just a fraction of the six jazz ensembles that are a part of the BYU music department. These groups serve as a testament to the musical diversity and talent found within the university.
