Dublin Comes Together for Charity Busk on Christmas Eve Led by Glen Hansard

Published December 24, 2023

In the heart of Dublin, the festive spirit was paired with a cause for compassion as thousands flocked to Grafton Street to partake in a time-honored tradition—the annual Christmas Eve charity busk. This event, which supports the Simon Community in their efforts to combat homelessness, saw the engagement of numerous Dubliners in a showcase of music and giving.

Remembering Shane MacGowan

Leading the day's festivities was none other than acclaimed singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, who paid homage to the renowned Shane MacGowan with a poignant rendition of 'A Rainy Night in Soho'. The touching tribute resonated with the heartfelt messages of the season, honoring the memory of the recently passed musical legend and frontman of The Pogues.

A Community Effort

The crowd, adorned in cheerful holiday attire, joined voices with local buskers in singing a variety of beloved tunes, including 'Zombie' by The Cranberries. Organized by the Dublin Simon Community, the event marked the 12th iteration of the Christmas Eve busk, held near the iconic Gaiety Theatre. Last-minute shoppers paused in their tracks, drawn by the blend of entertainment and philanthropy, to support one of the year's most significant fundraising opportunities for the charity.

Performances That Unite

Glen Hansard expressed his deep appreciation for the annual gathering, emphasizing its importance in providing shelter and assistance to those in need. The event saw children perched high on the shoulders of parents or scaling bins and trees for a glimpse of the performances, while Santa himself rallied the audience to contribute.

At one stage, a spirited individual from the audience stepped up to play the drums alongside Hansard for a rendition of 'Star Star' by The Frames. The lineup of performers included notable figures like Imelda May and participants who have benefitted from the services of Dublin Simon, reinforcing the message of community and support.
