Local Artist Aids in Expanding Music Program for Elsipogtog Youth
A local Fredericton artist, Bronwyn Robichaud, is channeling the power of art to support musical education by donating a portion of her artwork sales to improve and expand the Sistema music program at Elsipogtog First Nation. The Sistema program, known for providing free after-school music training, is focused on enhancing the self-esteem and confidence of young people from financially constrained backgrounds by engaging them in musical activities.
Sistema's Musical Impact
Sistema currently runs in nine different areas within New Brunswick, serving numerous children by teaching them music's discipline and joy. Swan Serna, the director at the Sistema Elsipogtog centre, is aiming to increase the number of participants by adding another teacher and 20 extra seats to accommodate more students, which are highly in demand. The present enrollment of the program is at 28 students, and entry selection is made through a lottery due to the limited spots available.
Advancing Through Music
The music program is not just about learning instruments but also about contributing to the children's overall personal growth. Serna highlights the role of music education in enhancing students' focus, which is essential when reading music and also boosts their academic performance. Participants such as Holden Milliea have expressed immense joy in their musical journey within Sistema. Students with higher proficiency have opportunities to join regional and even provincial orchestras, illustrating the program's commitment to nurturing their musical talents.
Community and Artistic Support
Beyond the program's success, it thrives on support from the provincial government, the Elsipogtog First Nation Band, private donors, and community initiatives like Robichaud's. Robichaud is inspired to pass on the profound impact that the arts have had on her to younger generations. Additionally, the Epoch Chemistry Coffee House, owned by former Sistema instructor Conor Conway, contributes proceeds from a new coffee blend to Sistema's fund, reflecting a community united by a love for the arts and education.
Robichaud's personal goal is to raise $6,000 for the program, with her initiative already generating sales and interest. The success of the program and its potential growth stand as a testament to the transformative power of music and the shared effort of individuals and organizations within a community.
