Celebrating Winnipeg 150 With a Melody: The New City of Song Initiative

Published February 22, 2024

Winnipeg, known for its vibrant culture and history, has embraced a new moniker ‘City of Song’ to celebrate its 150th anniversary. This initiative sets the stage for a series of music events that emphasize the city's rich vocal talent.

Uniting Community Through Music

The Winnipeg Arts Council’s latest undertaking, 'City of Song', is a year-long agenda of performances to celebrate legacy and the arts. This campaign goes well beyond the simple rendition of 'Happy Birthday’, aiming instead to bind the community and rejuvenate local arts.

An important part of these festivities includes several notable collaborations and events. Manitoba's rising pop star, Faouzia, who regularly shares the spotlight with renowned artists, has partnered with the likes of Ye and Ty Dolla $ign. Meanwhile, the Winter Blues Fest offers a platform for local acts to shine and suggests a potential ongoing showcase for Indigenous talent.

The Making of a Musical Metropolis

As part of its anniversary activities, the Winnipeg Arts Council has been instrumental in raising significant funds with government support, which is expected to greatly benefit the local arts scene.

The musical events span various genres and include performances by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the respected Manitoba Choral Association. Exciting highlights are scheduled throughout 2024, such as the Andrew Balfour’s ‘Transformation’ which melds different cultural vibes into a harmonious performance.

The initiative goes beyond professional displays, inviting the community to sing along and even features pop-up events for added engagement.
