Oliver Leith's 'Last Days' Opera Premieres in the U.S.

Published February 5, 2024

Oliver Leith is redefining the boundaries of opera with his latest work, remarkably influenced by Gus Van Sant's film that serves as a fictional account of rock icon Kurt Cobain's final moments. Aptly titled 'Last Days', this opera is set to enthral audiences in Los Angeles with its unique blend of joy and sorrow, depicted through eclectic soundscapes.

Chasing a Strange Feeling

Leith, a composer known for his inventive approach, interweaves seemingly ordinary sounds from objects like glass bottles and cereal bowls into his compositions. Far from being jocular, Leith's work is driven by a genuine pursuit of raw emotion, likened to the simultaneous happiness and grief experienced during a wake. This is evident in his opera, which forges its own narrative while drawing inspiration from its cinematic counterpart.

A Not-So-Biographical Expression

Contrary to initial assumptions, 'Last Days' is not a direct portrayal of Cobain's life. Instead, Leith, with librettist Matt Copson, delves into the realm of archetypal characters. The opera abstractly reflects on the nature of stories and myths, preserving the core essence of the narrative while allowing each new rendition to evolve. Singer Caroline Polachek contributes with a haunting pre-recorded aria, adding to the opera’s layered textures.

An Opera Outside Conventions

The U.S. premiere of 'Last Days' occurs as part of the esteemed Los Angeles Philharmonic's Green Umbrella series, promising an experience that transcends conventional operatic forms. The opera received significant attention during its London debut in 2022, not only for its creative ambition but also for its divergence from being a biopic. Instead, it showcases a fresh perspective on storytelling within the framework of musical theatre.
