UK's Music Streaming Hits Record High with Significant Growth in 2023

Published January 4, 2024

The UK's love for streamed music continues to grow, with recent data from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) showing a significant rise in the number of audio streams. In 2023, there were a whopping 179.6 billion music streams, marking an increase of 12.8% from the previous year's figure of 159.3 billion streams.

Streaming Doubles Over Five Years

Streaming has come a long way in the UK, with the total volume doubling since five years back when the count stood at 90.9 billion streams in 2018. This data reflects a resilient and escalating trend towards digital music consumption among UK listeners.

Not Just About Quantity

While the streaming count gives us insights into the volume, it doesn't fully uncover trends such as the growth of music streaming subscriptions and the revenue streaming platforms have poured into the music industry. However, a consistent year-over-year increase, including last year's 12.8% jump, sends a promising signal about the market's health and the industry's evolution in the streaming era.

Physical Sales and Market Value

Despite the evident dominance of streaming, vinyl sales in the UK showed an 11.8% YoY growth, reaching 6.1 million in 2023, while CD sales witnessed a decline of 6.9%, down to 10.8 million from 11.6 million the year before. Streamed music now constitutes 87.7% of the UK's recorded music market by Album Equivalent Sales, a significant climb from 63.6% in 2018.

Awards and Recognition in Streaming

The BPI's introduction of the BRIT Billion Award celebrates artists with over one billion career streams in the UK. With a vast number of artists crossing this impressive benchmark, the industry acknowledges streaming success in substantial figures, reflecting the level of popularity and impact these artists command.

Chart-Topping Tracks and Albums of 2023

2023 was a thriving year for music hits in the UK, with Miley Cyrus's single Flowers taking the lead with 198 million streams. The year's charts also featured top singles like Dave & Central Cee's Sprinter, RAYE ft. 070 Shake's Escapism, and Rema's Calm Down. The Weeknd's The Highlights topped the album charts.

Women Shine in the Music Charts

Historically, 2023 witnessed women artists dominating the Official Singles Chart, spending 31 weeks at the number one spot, with Miley Cyrus's Flowers holding for 10 weeks. The top 10 singles predominantly featured female artists like Dua Lipa and Ellie Goulding, reflecting a year of celebration and progression for women in music, but the BPI also reminds the industry not to be complacent as it works towards more balanced representation.
