Courtney Barnett Shines at Sydney Festival 2024 with 'Symphony Under the Stars' and More

Published January 19, 2024

California-based indie rock phenomenon, Courtney Barnett, marked her Sydney Festival debut with sentiments of her birthplace being her 'forever hometown.' Born in Sydney and having spent her childhood on the northern beaches, the 36-year-old artist now calls Joshua Tree, California, her home. Yet, Sydney's embrace remains dear to her heart.

A Musical Homecoming

Barnett's performance at the City Recital Hall stands as a centerpiece during the third weekend of Sydney Festival 2024, a time when both temperatures and excitement are running high. Her unique deadpan delivery and cleverly crafted lyrics have long resonated with fans, many of whom eagerly awaited her return to the local stage.

Barnett's Personal Connection to Sydney

Hailed with six ARIA awards, Barnett's youth in Sydney was spent among the familiar scenes of Church Point and Mona Vale — memories of her first job delivering newspapers, and melodies enjoyed on a Discman during early mornings. After moving to Tasmania at 16, her artistic roots further intertwined with Australia’s cultural landscape, especially following her acclaimed 2012 debut EP 'I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris.'

The Eclectic Sydney Festival Line-up

This celebrated weekend also shimmered with other star-studded performances, ranging from the heartfelt tales of Cambodian circus 'White Gold' to the melodic intersections of East and West through the Sydney Symphony Under the Stars featuring sitarist Anoushka Shankar. The diversity of the festival's offerings highlights Sydney's rich artistic and cultural offerings, at times free and family-friendly, ensuring accessibility and enjoyment for all.

A Repertoire of Innovation and Nostalgia

Barnett's Sydney Festival setlist promised a fusion of the old with the new — half of her show dedicated to instrumental pieces from her latest album 'End Of The Day,' and the latter half to her vast catalog of songs, ensuring a night of musical exploration and sentimental reminiscence.
