Kendrick Lamar and Move Afrika: Rwanda Ignite Kigali with Historic Show

Published December 7, 2023

The electrifying beats and dynamic performances have found a new home in Rwanda, thanks to the premiere of the Move Afrika: Rwanda event. This historical evening transformed Kigali's BK Arena into a pulsating hub of music and culture, featuring international headliner Kendrick Lamar and a lineup of talented African artists.

A New Era for African Live Events

The Move Afrika initiative is not just a concert series but a robust economic catalyst. More than 1,000 local Rwandans were employed to ensure the event's success, with an emphasis on enhancing the capabilities of Rwandan production teams, women-owned businesses, and young entrepreneurs. The vibrant night marked the beginning of a five-year plan to establish a pan-African touring circuit, reshaping the region's entertainment landscape.

Star-Studded Performances

The atmosphere was set ablaze with performances by Rwandan star Bruce Melodie and Fred Mfuranzima, whose poetry echoed through the crowds. Tanzanian singer Zuchu and choreographer Sherrie Silver, supported by a contingent of young local performers, showcased the rich tapestry of Rwandan dance. The collaboration between DJ TOXXYK and Ariel Wayz, complemented by surprise appearances from Kivumbi King and Bruce The 1st, further solidified the event's triumphant spirit.

However, it was the headlining act Kendrick Lamar who captivated the sold-out audience with a journey through his storied discography, sharing the stage with Rwandan dancers for a mesmerizing finale.

Empowering the Community

Underpinning the glamour was a commitment to community empowerment. The event provided valuable on-site training, engaged local creatives for stage design, showcased artisan-made Agaseke baskets, and implemented skill-building initiatives for security personnel. Over 70 locals sang and danced in the show, helping to produce a broadcast special that will further highlight Rwandan talent on the world stage.

Local youth also benefitted directly, with 4,000 free tickets distributed, including allocations for participants in environmental and health campaigns, and young individuals from disadvantaged districts, reinforcing the event's inclusive ethos.

Charting the Future

As part of its commitment to continuity and growth, Move Afrika will continue fostering local talent and drawing global attention to Rwanda's burgeoning event industry. By promoting knowledge exchange and providing platforms for international performance, Kigali is poised to become a leading destination for world-class live entertainment in Africa.
