Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center Debuts With a Blend of Classics and Innovations

Published February 5, 2024

The New York music scene is witnessing a significant transformation as the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra unveils its new identity - the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center. After decades as a summer staple, the ensemble is preparing to embrace a modern era with open arms and a diverse repertoire. The orchestra, maintaining its size and core members, is set to infuse new life into its seasonal offerings.

A New Baton to Lead

At the helm of this rebranded ensemble is Jonathon Heyward, a conductor whose star is rapidly rising. His mission is to preserve the ensemble's reputation for pushing boundaries while bringing fresh energy to the stage. Heyward expresses a deep respect for the orchestra's history and is enthusiastic about contributing to its distinguished legacy.

A Melodic Mixture: Celebrating the Old and Introducing the New

For its debut season this coming July, the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center will kick off with notable performances combining classical favorites and contemporary compositions. Attendees can expect a line-up that celebrates both the timelessness of iconic composers and the cutting-edge creativity of today's artists, including the world premiere of a piece by Hannah Kendall and the North American premiere of Huang Ruo’s 'City of Floating Sounds.’ Audiences will also be treated to works from Beethoven, Haydn, and, in homage to its roots, some cherished Mozart.

Engaging the Community with Innovation

The Festival Orchestra is extending an invitation to music enthusiasts and newcomers alike with unique program events. One such event, 'Symphony of Choice,' will empower the audience to curate the evening's playlist through voting. In a fusion of technology and art, an augmented reality exhibition will delve into the relationship between mental health and the compositions of Schumann, offering a multi-dimensional experience.
