Paul McCartney Inspired by Johnny Cash to Form Wings

Published January 26, 2024

In a recent discussion with Mojo magazine, music legend Paul McCartney, at 81 years of age, shared insights into the origins of his post-Beatles musical project, Wings. Surprisingly, the spark that led to the band's creation was ignited by none other than country music titan Johnny Cash.

Paul McCartney recalled a night spent with his first wife, Linda, when they witnessed Johnny Cash performing on television with a newly formed band, which included rock 'n' roll pioneer Carl Perkins—someone McCartney deeply admired. The sight of Cash enjoying himself with his band triggered the idea in McCartney to start a new musical venture. With little hesitation, Linda agreed to McCartney's proposal of forming a band, marking the beginning of their journey with Wings.

In Search of a New Musical Direction

Following the disbandment of The Beatles, McCartney was left with multiple options. He contemplated quitting music or starting a supergroup with well-known artists like Eric Clapton. However, he was not enthused by these paths. Reflecting on how The Beatles began as a group of friends learning and growing together, McCartney yearned for a similar experience. Therefore, he decided to form a band with lesser-known musicians, embracing a learn-as-you-go approach. According to him, it was a leap of faith and an adventurous move.

Remembering Denny Laine of Wings

Despite aiming for less star-studded members, Wings included Denny Laine, a founding member of the Moody Blues. Laine, who regrettably passed away in December 2023 owing to interstitial lung disease, was a pillar in Wings, remaining in the band throughout its decade-long existence alongside Paul and Linda McCartney. Paul expressed his grief and admiration for Laine, emphasizing the challenges and eventual success they shared in keeping the band afloat after The Beatles.
