Published March 12, 2024

The University at Buffalo's Center for the Arts (CFA) is thrilled to announce an upcoming performance by the GRAMMY Award-winning ensemble, Nickel Creek, scheduled for Saturday, March 23rd. The concert will take place in the Mainstage Theatre, renowned for its acoustical excellence and located on the North Campus of the university.

After a period of quiet due to the pandemic, live music is making an exhilarating return. The enforced break led many artists, including Nickel Creek, to discover new avenues for creative output and collaboration. For Nickel Creek, whose members include Chris Thile on mandolin, Sara Watkins on violin, and Sean Watkins on guitar, this has culminated in 'Celebrants', their first studio album in nearly a decade. This new work is a testament to their evolved sound, embracing the beauty of human connections despite the challenges they bring.

Fans can expect something special with 'Celebrants', as it has been hailed as a 'masterpiece' by critics. Jamie Enser, the CFA's executive director, described the band's upcoming performance as complementing the CFA’s diverse season aimed at connecting with both the university and the Western New York community at large.

Over the years, Nickel Creek has been instrumental in pioneering the 'Americana music' genre. They are known not only for their collaborative work within the band but also for individual artistic pursuits. Sara Watkins, for instance, is part of the GRAMMY-winning I’m With Her, Chris Thile is known for his role in Punch Brothers, and Sean Watkins has made his mark with solo albums as well as Watkins Family Hour. All their experiences blend into the unique sound of Nickel Creek that fans adore.

2023 is shaping up to be a milestone year for Nickel Creek, having been on national television and receiving the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award from the American Music Association. Their performance at the CFA is poised to be a memorable one, catering to anyone with a love for roots, folk, bluegrass, acoustic, and Americana genres.

For those eager to attend, tickets range from $49 to $89, with a select number of VIP options also available through Ticketmaster. Audience members can buy their tickets online or visit the CFA Box Office in person for their purchase.
