Empowering Youth Through Music and Message

Published February 25, 2024

The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey (PDFNJ) has been uniting talented high school musicians with a noble cause through the “Your Song! Your Voice! Shout Down Drugs competition.” This initiative, entering its remarkable 20th season, not only highlights musical prowess but also promotes substance use prevention, encouraging the next generation to take a stand through their art.

Inspirational Stories from the Participants

Reflecting on the competition’s impact, previous winners share how their victories have opened up new horizons in their music careers and personal development. Jordan Wilson, last year's first-place winner from Lawrenceville, has experienced a cascade of opportunities post-victory, including radio features and live performances that expanded his audience reach. The win affirmed his belief in the power of message-driven music.

Tina LaRosa, hailing from East Hanover and landing second place, saw her victory as an ignition to her creative potential. With her earnings, she improved her musical toolkit and dedicated herself to composing songs that raise awareness on social issues.

Matthew DiTizio from Egg Harbor Township, who claimed the third spot, used the momentum from the contest to deepen his technical knowledge and collaborate with other artists, pushing his creative boundaries.

Leela Kumar of Marlboro won the hearts of the public through online voting with her passionate songwriting, which has also propelled her endeavors in addressing mental health awareness through music and theatre.

The Upcoming Season and Its Perks

The upcoming competition promises to extend these opportunities to new applicants, offering young artists a chance to have their voices heard on a larger stage. The event is backed by influential supporters such as the New Jersey Broadcasters Association (NJBA) and 95.9 WRAT.

With a deadline for entries set, hopeful musicians are gearing up to submit their songs for a chance to perform at the virtual Prevention Concert. Esteemed judges will then select finalists whose tracks will enjoy airplay, culminating in live winner announcements at the concert.

Substantial music contracts are up for grabs for the most outstanding messages in song. The first-place winner will receive a $5,000 contract, followed by $3,000 and $2,000 contracts for the second and third place, respectively.

Those interested in joining this extraordinary contest that melds music with a mission can find rules and entry details on the official competition website.
