Tribute Concert for Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan Set for March

A special tribute concert for the late Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan is scheduled to take place at Carnegie Hall in New York City on March 20th. The event, titled 'Sinéad & Shane,' aims to honor the musical legacies and lives of the renowned Irish artists who both passed away last year.

An Evening of Commemoration

A diverse lineup of performers, including Glen Hansard, David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, Cat Power, and Amanda Palmer, will participate in the concert. More artists are expected to be announced, contributing to an evening dedicated to celebrating the friendship and careers of O’Connor and MacGowan.

A Musical Bond

The connection between O’Connor and MacGowan traces back to the Eighties, and their collaboration on the song 'Haunted,' which was part of the 1986 film 'Sid and Nancy' soundtrack. O’Connor’s rise to international stardom came after her rendition of Prince’s 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in 1990, which was followed by a successful career that included 10 studio albums and recognition as International Female Solo Artist with a Brit Award.

Meanwhile, MacGowan became famous as the lead vocalist of The Pogues, an Anglo-Irish band that combined political sentiments and punk rock with traditional Irish music. The two artists maintained a complex relationship over the years, marked by both friendship and turbulence, such as when O’Connor alerted the police to MacGowan's heroin use, leading to his arrest. Despite initial anger, MacGowan later acknowledged O’Connor’s influence in helping him cease his drug dependency.

Their reunion in 2007, during a concert in Dublin where O’Connor performed with The Pogues, was a highlight in their history. O’Connor passed away at 56 in July 2023, and Shane MacGowan died in November, just shy of his 66th birthday. Their funerals witnessed large gatherings of grieving fans.
