A Tribe Called Quest’s Touching Induction at the 2024 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
On October 19, music fans witnessed a significant moment at the 2024 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. The event celebrated various artists, including pop icon Cher, who finally received her deserved recognition. However, for hip-hop enthusiasts, the highlight was undoubtedly the induction of A Tribe Called Quest.
Despite being eligible since 2015, the iconic rap group was inducted this year, a moment that brought joy to its members Q-Tip and Jarobi White. With gratitude and excitement, they both celebrated this landmark achievement.
During the ceremony, Jarobi White delivered a heartfelt tribute to Phife Dawg, a beloved member of the group who passed away in 2016. "I don’t have any stories, all I have is gratitude. What I’m saying is thank you. Tribe fans everywhere, we wouldn’t be anything without you. Ali Shaheed, I love you, boy. Wish you were here. Let me give it up for Phife’s mom and dad who are right here," he said.
Phife Dawg’s parents were present, feeling the pride of their son’s legacy as the audience and other musicians paid their respects. In a touching moment, Ali Shaheed Muhammad's sister stood in for him during the tribute.
Q-Tip also used his speech to highlight the significance of A Tribe Called Quest's induction. He expressed, "It has been the terrain for many of us to do Whoppers and Hip-Hoppers, and yes, to all of you pseudo-historians who might be confused about what hip hop really is. And what’s more rock and roll than the blues? Just like our predecessors, we had to find spaces in the outskirts of cities and towns to express ourselves. A spark that burned within us boys in 1985 in New York City."
The tribute concluded with a special performance featuring an all-star lineup, including Queen Latifah performing "Can I Kick It?," De La Soul’s Pos and Black Thought from The Roots with "Check the Rime," Common singing "Bonita Applebum," and Busta Rhymes performing "Scenario," all accompanied by The Roots band.
This year's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony was streamed live on Disney+, and a special featuring the performances will air on ABC on January 1. Afterward, it will be available for viewing on Hulu. For more details, please visit Hulu.
