Longmont's Winter Walkabout Music Showcase Beats Winter Blues with Over 100 Musicians

Published January 25, 2024

When the winter chill sets in and the days seem to drag, the city of Longmont brings an antidote to the seasonal slump with its annual Winter Walkabout Music Showcase. This pedestrian-friendly festival is on its sixth iteration, offering a full day's adventure of musical immersion. On February 3rd, starting at 2 p.m., more than 50 artists will come together to perform in 15 different locations across downtown Longmont, delivering their melodies to the public until 9:15 p.m. Each venue, which ranges from a quaint, restored 19th-century church to the grand Dickens Opera House, adds its unique flavor to the eclectic collection of performances.

Get to Know the Music and Musicians

This musical extravaganza not only serves as a fitness activity but also as a cultural hub showcasing Colorado's vibrant music scene. For just $30 a ticket, festivalgoers gain access to all 55 concerts, offering a taste of everything from stompy rock and bluesy folk to Latin fusion and pop. Noteworthy among the acts is the Denver-based band 2MX2, known for their dynamic blend of genres and recognition as one of Colorado's top bands in 2022. They will headline at the Elks Ballroom. Other main acts include Kid Astronaut and The 89s, each bringing their distinctive sounds to the forefront.

The Winter Walkabout was conceived by Colin Argys and local musician Jessica Carson as a way to reinvigorate the Longmont community during the often slow and gloomy winter season. It provides a unique opportunity for local businesses, venues, and artists to connect and thrive. In its past, the event has drawn a warm reception for its intimate performances and playful venues, bringing crowds together even amid snowy conditions and the winter blues.

A Festival of Diverse Sounds

Ahead of the show, 2MX2's Owen Trujillo expressed excitement about being invited back as headliners, highlighting the festival's role in connecting the band with Longmont's audience. Similarly, Kid Astronaut, performing for the first time at the festival, shared the significance of headlining and the journey as an artist to reach this point.

Longmont's Winter Walkabout goes beyond just being a musical event; it's an intersection where different artists and attendees from varied backgrounds share experiences and create memories together. From the soulful touches of headlining indie band The 89s to the spirited performances of the returning Mojomama, the festival promises a rich tapestry of narratives and emotions through its artist lineup. Whether you’re looking to kick up the energy or find a moment of connection, the Winter Walkabout has something to offer.

The festival's ultimate aim is to create a space where fans can experience a broad emotional ride—dancing to uplifting beats, feeling the tug of heart-wrenching ballads, and embracing the intimacy of love songs. As Longmont transforms into a winter wonderland of music, the community is invited to smash those seasonal blues and revel in the unifying power of song.
