ClimeCo and Music Sustainability Alliance Unveil Insights on Live Music Industry's Green Initiatives

Published March 13, 2024

ClimeCo, a leader in decarbonization and environmental solutions, has joined forces with the Music Sustainability Alliance (MSA) to reveal the findings from a major study on sustainability in the live music scene. Over 50 key live music industry stakeholders such as tour managers, promoters, label representatives, concert venues, and others shared their experiences and thoughts through one-on-one interviews.

Significant Discoveries

The research shows a unanimous agreement on the importance of sustainability with all parties working towards improvement. The primary influencers shaping sustainability efforts emerge from all levels, but especially high-profile artists, who wield power in demanding greener practices.

What's Driving Change?

An impressive 91% of participants cited artists as the main drivers for sustainable change. Their influence, often conveyed via 'green riders,' convinces venues and promoters to adopt environmentally friendly practices. On the other hand, smaller artists find it more challenging to exercise such influence. Fan involvement is equally crucial, with 82% agreeing that fan engagement directly impacts the success of sustainability initiatives.

Accomplishments in Green Efforts

From waste reduction to cleaner energy source trials, 91% of respondents have recorded green achievements. Production teams have experimented with solar power in live events, and efforts have been made in logistics for the use of alternative fuels.

Current Hurdles

Despite these strides, the industry faces significant challenges such as high costs and the need for standardized data for tracking carbon footprints. Some suggest that sponsorship could offset environmental initiative costs, but greenwashing concerns persist. There's also an industry-wide debate over who should take the reins on environmental matters.

Opportunities on the Horizon

Opportunities for growth in sustainable practices abound, especially for those who lead the charge in adopting green changes. Ideas include ride-sharing for concerts and better planning to reduce tours' environmental impact. Education and local policies are also seen as pivotal for sustaining these environmental efforts.

Leaders at ClimeCo and the MSA express a shared vision that the music industry is poised to play a significant role in climate action and sustainability. ClimeCo's collaborative efforts are aimed at creating impactful sustainability strategies while the MSA focuses on fostering a community committed to climate action.
