DC Announces 'My Body, My Festival': A Three-Day Music Festival Celebrating Abortion Access

Published January 19, 2024

As we recall the 51-year legacy of Roe v. Wade on January 22, the mood is somber given the Supreme Court's reversal of abortion rights half a century later. The ruling triggered a series of relentless attacks on abortion, which activists have been persistently battling through rallies and advocacy events. In light of these challenges, the DC Abortion Fund (DCAF) is launching a joyful, community-building music festival titled My Body, My Festival.

A Festive Response to Serious Challenges

In an effort to create a space of celebration for those upholding abortion rights, DCAF is announcing this special three-day music festival to take place from May 16 to May 18, spanning across three iconic venues in D.C.—Pie Shop, Songbyrd, and metrobar. The festival will feature over 15 local music acts, and the proceeds will directly support individuals seeking abortion services in and around the D.C. area through DCAF's funding.

Festival Details and Lineup

Organized to reflect the spirit of D.C., its unwavering stance on abortion access, and its vibrant local music scene, the lineup for My Body, My Festival includes an array of artists who actively support the proabortion movement. On the first day at Pie Shop, attendees will enjoy pop and punk tunes while the second day at Songbyrd will resonate with indie vibes. The final day will be marked by jazz and neo-soul performances at metrobar, complete with a resource fair for those interested in furthering abortion activism.

Looking Back to Move Forward

Recalling the Rock for Choice concerts, which occurred from 1991 to 2001 against a backdrop of reproductive rights threats, the DCAF festival draws on a rich history of music acts standing in solidarity with abortion rights. The event is designed to honor this past while serving a pressing current need as DCAF has funded a substantial amount for abortion care, especially after the significant Dobbs ruling.

Local Support and Impact Beyond the City

The DCAF has always played a crucial role due to D.C.'s progressive policies on abortion, thus supporting a much larger population than just the city itself. Participants in the festival are also contributing to a cause that brings hope and assistance to many across the country.

Building Community Through Music and Activism

The collaboration between musicians, activists, and community organizations encapsulates the essence of My Body, My Festival. Metrobar has generously provided its venue without charge, exemplifying support for DCAF's mission. It is a festival built from grassroots efforts, fuelled by community engagement and partnerships, to advance reproductive rights through art and collective action.

Ultimately, My Body, My Festival symbolizes the intersection of advocacy, community, and art, underpinned by the shared joy of making a difference through every ticket sold. It's a testament to the power of combining celebration with activism, underscoring the belief that fighting for a cause can also be an exuberant and uniting experience.

Festival Attendance and Purpose

Set to be a monumental celebration that combines D.C.'s local music, small businesses, and support for abortion access, the festival promises to be both joyful and purposeful, with sales contributing to the crucial work of DCAF.
