Manitoba's Ambitious Plan for a Curling Centre and Music Museum Hangs in Balance

Published January 22, 2024

The vision for a new international attraction in Manitoba that would celebrate both the sport of curling and the province's musical icons is currently on hold. A unique concept that aimed to merge a curling centre with a museum honoring Manitoba musicians, including Neil Young and Randy Bachman, has yet to move forward.

Provincial Project in Question

Conversation about creating separate venues for curling and music history in Manitoba has been ongoing for many years. However, it was the province's previous Progressive Conservative government that proposed a joint development in 2020. Since then, two different premiers have taken office amidst the global pandemic and there's been little to no advancement on this project publicly.

The New Democrat government, which took charge in October of the previous year, has not indicated a commitment to the combined facility. Glen Simard, the minister responsible for sport, culture, heritage, and tourism, mentioned that the project is under review but no decision has been reached as of yet.

A Vision Once Championed

The idea of a centre dedicated to curling excellence was put forward by former premier Brian Pallister in 2018. Pallister envisioned this centre as a premier venue for training and hosting international curling competitions. Alongside the curling centre, a music museum has been proposed to celebrate the rich musical contributions from Manitoba, with discussions dating back over two decades spearheaded by advocates like music historian John Einarson.

Einarson, along with other supporters, believes in the value of a space that would honour the diverse musical talent of the province, from classic rock artists to Indigenous and country musicians. He also shared that Neil Young expressed willingness to donate memorabilia if the facility were to be established, and imagines interactive exhibits, including opportunities for visitors to engage with famous tunes like Bachman's 'Takin' Care of Business'.

Uncertain Progress

The former Tory government had actually issued a request for proposals for the development plan of the site intended for the dual-purpose facility. However, due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent changes in government leadership, progress details remain undisclosed. Simard did not confirm whether the province received any proposals in response to their call.

Despite the uncertainty, Einarson remains optimistic, recently having discussions with a provincial government representative. While he acknowledges the journey has been long and without tangible results, he continues to hold onto the possibility of the project's realization.
