Remembering the Musical Legends We Lost in 2023

Published December 30, 2023

The year 2023 marked the departure of numerous iconic figures who defined and reshaped the landscape of music. Pioneers of the 1960s revolution in rock and folk, a queen of rock 'n' roll, masterful guitarists, and Ireland’s own punk poet are among the stars we bade farewell to this year. The list spans beloved artists such as Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach, Harry Belafonte, David Crosby, and Tina Turner, whose legacies are etched in the annals of musical history.

As the year commenced, we mourned the loss of Southern female rapper Gangsta Boo, who passed away at the young age of 43. The music world also said goodbye to Alan Rankine, influential member of The Associates, at 64, and the voice behind the hit “Mr. Big Stuff,” Jean Knight, at 80. Tom Verlaine, whose contributions to Television were formidable, passed on January 28, aged 83.

When spring arrived, the founding member of Tom Petty’s original band, Mudcrutch, Tom Leadon, left us at the age of 70. Keith Reid, known for penning the Procol Harum classic 'A Whiter Shade of Pale,' also died at 76. The Script’s co-founder and guitarist Mark Sheehan’s passing at 46 and Tim Bachman of Bachman–Turner Overdrive at 71 were other notable losses.

Summer and Autumn Farewells

Mid-year, we grieved for drummer Johnny “Blackie Onassis” Rowan of Urge Overkill who died at 57, and the multifaceted Jane Birkin, who left at 76. John Gosling of The Kinks and Bob Feldman, who co-wrote “My Boyfriend’s Back,” also departed.

Later, the world lost American country singer Charlie Robison at 59, British folk artist Roger Whittaker at 87, and Terry Kirkman of The Association at 83. Kool & the Gang’s George Brown also died on November 17, at 74, leaving a void in the band's rhythm section.

Jeff Beck: A Glimpse at a Legend

Jeff Beck, born June 24, 1944, established his prowess on the guitar from a young age, later joining the Yardbirds and forming the Jeff Beck Group. His musical journey continued with multiple bands and solo projects including his final album Loud Hailer and his collaboration album with Johnny Depp, 18. Beck's passing on January 10 from bacterial meningitis at age 78, marked the end of an era.

End of the Year Mourning

As 2023 drew to a close, more stalwarts took their final bow. This includes Robbie Robertson’s Americana-infused contributions with The Band, and the soulful melodies of Ray Hildebrand as half of the duo Paul & Paula. The world also bid adieu to youth prodigy Faye Fantarrow, troubadour Jimmy Buffett, ‘Dream Weaver’ Gary Wright, and the punk energy of Shane MacGowan of The Pogues. Each left their unique stamp on the music world.

The names mentioned herein are but a few of the countless talents and influencers who have left us. Each artist contributed to the rich tapestry of music that narrated our lives, emotions, and histories.
