Published March 14, 2024

Punchlove, a band consisting of five alumni from NYU's Steinhardt School, has excited the indie music scene with the release of their inaugural album ‘Channels’. The group, well-versed in everything music production thanks to their educational backgrounds, is now bringing their dynamic blend of shoegaze and electric indie to fans across the country on tour.

From Steinhardt Graduates to Bandmates

The members of Punchlove—Joey Machina, Ethan Williams, Jillian Olesen, Ian Lange-McPherson, and Viz Wel—have journeyed from mere acquaintances to close collaborators in a Brooklyn apartment that doubles as their recording studio. Their development as a unit has been shaped by significant milestones and shared experiences, particularly the transformative phase post their graduation. The result of their collaboration is ‘Channels’, which promises listeners a sonically layered and distinct auditory adventure.

Behind the Scenes of 'Channels'

In creating 'Channels', the band drew inspiration from the personal and somewhat disorienting transition from academic life to the adult world. The themes resonate throughout their lyrics and melodies—especially in tracks like 'Screwdriver'. With their hands-on expertise in music production, the album's appeal lies in its technical prowess as much as its emotional resonance, with certain guitar parts meticulously recorded hundreds of times to achieve the perfect sound.

Punchlove’s Exciting Live Performances

Punchlove relishes their live shows, where songs such as 'Screwdriver' and 'Birdsong' bring unique energy and challenge to their performances. Their appreciation for their fans is evident, with the band expressing excitement over seeing mosh pits and even crowd-surfing during their shows—a testament to their impact on their audience.

The Advantage of a Home Studio

Having a home studio has been an integral part of crafting their debut album. Immersed in their creative space, they were able to focus on the fine details, leading to a product they are truly proud of—their hard work and authenticity manifesting into a polished and heartfelt album.

The band dismisses any notion of laziness or coolness; instead, their music and energy exhibit a passionate dedication to their art. With 'Channels', Punchlove has set a sturdy foundation for their ascent in the alternative rock and shoegaze genres, bringing a raw and compelling sound that echoes their genuine aspirations and collective spirit.
