Josh Homme on the Taylor Hawkins Tribute and His Bond with Dave Grohl

Published December 10, 2023

Josh Homme, lead vocalist and guitarist for Queens of The Stone Age, recently shared his thoughts on the heartfelt tribute performance for the late Taylor Hawkins. The show took place in 2022 as a homage to the drummer who tragically passed away in March of that year.

Remembering Taylor Hawkins

In conversation, Homme recounted the special moment he performed the classic 'Let's Dance' by David Bowie alongside noted musician Nile Rodgers. The performance was part of the tribute event at Wembley Stadium. He highlighted the importance of escapism and how singing for Hawkins at that tribute felt like a fitting way to express love and pay respect, noting it was a sort of grand gesture that Dave Grohl could envision to honor his friend.

Friendship with Dave Grohl

Homme went on to discuss his enduring friendship with Dave Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters. Grohl has played with Queens of The Stone Age and also collaborated with Homme in Them Crooked Vultures, which included John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin. Homme expressed fondness for their long-standing relationship, one which he playfully referred to as a 'romance' based on their deep connection and shared moments.

His recollections of conversations over breakfast with Grohl cemented his sentiments about their friendship and creative camaraderie. The duo has shared many lights and dark moments, which Homme treasures.

Celebrating Creativity

In addition to the tribute and friendships, Homme touched upon his musical journey and the healing nature of songwriting. He offered insights into his recent album 'In Times New Roman' and how writing helped him navigate through tough periods in his life. He also highlighted a special moment when he paid tribute to Shane MacGowan of The Pogues during a Dublin show, lauding him as an irreplaceable poet.

With their next big appearance, Queens of The Stone Age is set to headline the Download Festival in 2024. This event will present an opportunity for fans to see them perform alongside other top rock acts.
