Malta’s Artistic Director Kurt Buttigieg Unveils the ‘Sustain-Delay’ Electronic Music Program

Published February 18, 2024

The Malta Society of Arts has launched the 'Sustain-Delay' program, with its first concert held this week, marking the beginning of a string of six cutting-edge electronic music events set to run until October. Artistic Director Kurt Buttigieg, in conversation with James Cummings, articulated the vision behind the series - to prompt both audiences and artists to reevaluate their approach to music and its creation.

A Blend of Innovation and Tradition

Featuring an amalgamation of medieval instruments, modern synthesisers, and even the conversion of organic elements into soundscapes, 'Sustain-Delay' showcases an impressive lineup of performances. These shows pair both local and international talents to provide an immersive and thought-provoking musical experience.

Creating Music from the Earth

The program commenced with 'Music from Stones and Plants,' headlined by the Italian pair Molom. The artists captivated the audience by creating a symphony of sounds derived from Maltese limestone, incorporating each sculptural impact into their auditory canvas in real-time. Supporting acts included Alien Montesin with a nature-infused DJ set and producer Naqara blending plant-based sounds with ambient and IDM genres.

Fostering a Community through Sound

Buttigieg, a seasoned artist with an extensive background in music and sound art, stressed the significance of nurturing a community that appreciates and participates in these sound explorations. He emphasised that the 'Sustain-Delay' program seeks to establish a legacy, citing that art devoid of legacy is futile. The goal is not solely to translate artistic concepts to audiences but also to cultivate a community inspired to engage deeply with sound.

Electronic Music Beyond the Nightclubs

Striving to redefine electronic music's conventional club association, Buttigieg aims to demonstrate the genre’s wider artistic potential through innovative sound manipulations. With 'Sustain-Delay,' he intends to expand the understanding of what electronic music can embody.

International Collaboration and Exploration

Inclusion of international artists is part of the program's design, creating a platform for both global influence and local talent to converge, often leading to enlightening collaborations. Buttigieg also looks forward to showcasing his artistry in another Malta Society of Arts concert series, 'Con_Tempo,' focusing on classical and contemporary music.

Approaching Electronic Music

Buttigieg compares the discipline of learning electronic music to that of traditional instruments, highlighting the element of composition and the necessity of mastering a vast array of possibilities within the electronic realm. Despite differing techniques, he believes the ultimate measure of music’s value is in its resonance with the audience’s emotions and thoughts.
